5115-Ep 7:Has R.E.M. Been Erased? (Or, Nostalgia Is A Disease)

Cass & Lee Season 1 Episode 7

Based off a conversation around one of Lee’s favorite bands, R.E.M., they were one of the biggest bands in the world in the early 90s-fast forward to today and it seems they’ve all but been erased.

Their first 5 albums are masterpieces (IOO), yet current indie bands rarely name them as influences, unlike The Replacements, The Smiths, or The Cure, to name a few of their contemporaries.

In response, Cass mentioned a topic that comes up often in music, nostalgia, and threw out  “nostalgia is a disease”. And so she does a deep dive into the reasons why R.E.M doesn’t factor into music influence today and how nostalgia plays a part.

But first:

-Sprinkles Are Monstrous

-Has Taylor Swift reached a Michael Jackson level of fame? Cass has thoughts.

-Busch Apple! Busch Peach! And now . . .Busch Corn?

-Hype Men: There’s Chuck D & Jerome with The Time, for example. Then there’s Bez, from The Happy Mondays.  Watch and wonder-they pay him to do this.
